Four Commercial Carpet Trends for 2016

These are exciting times for the commercial design industry.  New colors are constantly being introduced and applied in fresh and unexpected ways.  Innovative products – from seating to lighting to flooring — continue to inspire for their form and functionality.  The way we think about the spaces we work, live and play in continues to evolve.  In short, architects, designers, and manufacturers are all pushing the limits of what’s possible.  We are all rethinking the way in which people and products interact with their spaces.

So, what does this mean for commercial carpet products in the new year?  We have some thoughts!

Zeftron Poms
Zeftron offers colors that can make your custom carpet come to life

More Custom Colors and Carpets – Our carpet mill customers frequently ask for new and custom colors, and we are happy to oblige!  This trend is driven by product design teams and designers who realize that as the most abundant surface for any interior, carpet can play a major role in making a design statement.  Custom colors and customized carpets are crucial in making that design statement. Customization can help create a space that evokes a feeling or an experience.  As color experts for more than 40 years, we’re proud to be able to work hand-in-hand with our mill partners and designers to help them create the custom colors they desire.

Zeftron nylon installationGreater Styling Versatility The “blending” of interior spaces continues.  Many offices today integrate a residential or homey feel to them.  Senior living spaces, while still traditional in many instances, are bringing in themes typically found in a hospitality setting.  This new reality requires manufacturers to think differently and develop crossover products that are versatile enough to work in many different end-use spaces. Fortunately, Zeftron nylon is a highly flexible fiber when it comes to styling.  Our fiber enables carpet manufacturers to create products with varying styles, patterns and colorways to easily work across multiple end-use spaces.

Exceptional Performance – The more things change, the more they stay the same. Designers expect more from the products they specify today.  In addition to customization options and greater styling flexibility, they expect exceptional performance. Zeftron nylon is the only fiber brand that offers designers the piece-of-mind they need when it comes to performance.  Concerns about staining, color fading and wear become a non-factor when specifying a carpet made with Zeftron nylon.

Cradle to Cradle

More Green –One could argue that having a sustainable product is a given in today’s marketplace. Yet sustainability should never be a given or an afterthought.  As a fully closed-loop recyclable nylon with a minimum of 25 percent recycled content in every color, Zeftron continues to be a responsible steward of the earth and its resources.  We see green not as a trend for 2016, but as a vital part of everything we do every single day, month and year.

We welcome your thoughts and comments.

Zeftron nylon featured in Buildings: 3 Benefits of Specifying Established Branded Nylon for Carpet

We are happy to share excerpts from a recent article in Buildings Magazine by Zeftron’s business leader Tim Blount. This article underscores the importance of knowing how specifying a carpet with an established branded nylon such as Zeftron can maximize your investment. See the abbreviated article below and let us know what you think:

One way designers and facility managers can protect and maximize their flooring investment is by specifying a carpet made with an established branded nylon. Consider this: The floor of any space is typically the most abundant surface.  The floor covering choice you make will set the foundation for the entire design, including the environment’s furnishings, wall color, light fixtures, and other elements.

1187086_632421110125528_949425768_nFlooring surfaces must also be highly functional. Carpet in a classroom must be able to withstand heavy foot traffic, soiling, staining, and crushing.  Carpet in an office environment, such as a hallway or a conference room, must look stylish while also offering high performance. You need a nylon with a proven track record to ensure great durability.

Many nylons today have only recently been introduced to the marketplace and long-term performance attributes are still unproven.  These nylons don’t have a track record of proven performance over an extended period of time in multiple end-use areas. Many of these nylon brands are “internal” to the carpet manufacturer.  Carpet manufacturers began making their own commercial-grade nylon several years ago as a way to “upsell” their own carpet products. Unfortunately, these “internal” brands must balance satisfying both internal and external needs. Internal brands may not always have as stringent of quality specifications for color continuity, colorfastness, and color clarity.

An established third-party branded nylon brings several advantages to a commercial carpet product:

1.  Proven Performance – The old adage of “you get what you pay for” is true when it comes to nylon.  Established nylon brands have been making commercial grade nylon for years.  Over time, they have honed manufacturing and engineering processes to develop a product that has been rigorously tested (internally and externally) and is certified to meet critical commercial end-use applications.  Carpet made with unproven nylon brands may not have the qualified assurance that it will perform as well as expected.

2. Warranties – Most brands offer a variety of warranties for how the product should perform such as: independent lifetime warranties for carpet wear, static control, stain removal, and color stability.  Designers and facility managers should fully understand what is covered, by whom, for how long, and with what limitations. Warranties from an established, third-party nylon brand can provide additional coverage totally independent from those offered by a carpet manufacturer.

3.  Services & Support – Specifying a product is a process, not just a one-time event.  This process begins with education and understanding:  What does the space require? What would be the best flooring product?  What is the budget available?  When a carpet is selected and installed, it doesn’t end there.  Nor does it end when a carpet eventually meets the end of its useful life. Established nylon brands can offer a multitude of resources to help designers and facility managers every step of the way.  Some brands may have regional representatives that can come onsite to provide specification assistance or maintenance tips.  Others may offer educational literature about their sustainability attributes or recycling methods.

Not all commercial carpets are the same.  However, those made with an established, third-party branded nylon typically offer a high quality product, warranties, and value-added services. These valuable benefits can help designers and facility managers protect and generate a greater return on their flooring investment.  Designers have a lot of things to worry about, but the carpet they specify should not be one.

Custom Masland Carpet made with 100% Zeftron nylon: Installation in Senior Living Facilities

Commercial carpet products made with Zeftron nylon can be found in the world’s most stylish hotels, airports and universities across the country. We are excited about our latest installation in two upscale senior living facilities.

RLPS Interiors, a firm with extensive experience in the senior living market, was charged with designing the interiors of two facilities serving senior patients and residents. RLPS needed a carpet that would not only provide a warm and inviting aesthetic, but also match the client’s overall design concept.

This unique project required a custom carpet product. RLPS reached out to our mill partner, Masland Hospitality for a solution. Starting with stock patterns from Masland Hospitality, the designers altered the patterns slightly to make them more accommodating to the needs of the residents at each facility and then applied custom colors using Zeftron nylon colors.

Color was a key factor for the project. Senior Interior Designer Derek Perini felt Zeftron’s sophisticated color palette stood out above other nylon options.  “We preferred Zeftron due to the richness of the colors available” he said. Zeftron is also a fully renewable nylon and contains a minimum of 25 percent recycled content in every color.

In total, more than 7,000 square yards of carpet were specified for the facilities covering corridors, elevators, hallways, lobbies and other common areas.

Hotel Design: Time for Innovation from the Floor Up

As hotels continue to upgrade their interiors with eye-catching items such as unique artwork, highly decorative lighting and inspirational custom carpets, the trend toward better technology integration continues as well. Hotels undertaking these initiatives are out to set themselves apart from the competition, while also creating highly memorable experiences for their customers.

starwood-hotel-keyless-smartphone-bluetooth-lock-entryWhat’s happening in the world of Hotel Design? A recent Buzzfeed article titled “The Hotel Industry’s Race To Escape The Dinosaur Age” addresses one of the current struggles of the Hotel world: technology. Features like mobile booking, keyless check-in, and customer operated kiosks in the lobby bring old hotels into the new age. The article got us thinking. Technology isn’t the only thing hotels should update to join this century. Changing the check-in experience for customers will lead to redesigning the lobby. This is an opportunity to update all aspects of your hotel design.

Screenshot 2015-02-25 15.09.55In the article Ryan Meliker, a senior analyst at MLV & Co, says “large hotel chains tend to conduct a major overhaul just once every seven years.” That’s not hard to believe considering the logistics of a major design overhaul. It is shocking to think that interiors that were “in-style” or “on-trend” seven years ago still exist in most hotels. Carpet has a distinct advantage because it can be easily removed and a new design theme can be added with less interruption of the hotel’s business.

Newer interiors, like updated technology, especially appeal to younger professionals who travel.  This includes millennials who know what they want, compare hotels online, read reviews and take to the internet to voice concern and displeasure more than any other group. (Photos of Hotel Design Magazine from 2008).

Hotels that want toScreenshot 2015-02-25 15.12.43 attract more travelers, gain repeat customers and generate more word-of-mouth buzz must frequently update their interiors. These updates need to be sensitive to the design, functionality and technology trends which are often driven by the “next generation” of customers while considering the context of the property’s brand. The opportunity for carpet in the millennial quest for a unique and authentic hotel, lies in its ability to be custom designed more easily than other furnishings.

Generally speaking, today’s interior design aesthetic is cleaner, integrates bolder color choices and features highly decorative finishes. Designers working on hospitality projects can achieve stunning, memorable and customer-centric design looks when specifying the right commercial carpet.  Whether it’s a custom product or a running line, carpets made with Zeftron nylon range from sleek, to delicate floral designs, to bright and modern. With a custom carpet, you can achieve virtually any look you desire.

We recently helped the Embassy Suites Nashville at Vanderbilt upgrade their more than 200 rooms. This project proves that even established big-name hotels can make significant changes on a property-by-property basis. The end result is a beautiful fresh space.

Shades of Grey in the “Designer Select” Collection

Designer Select Colors
The “Designer Select” Collection, new from Zeftron nylon in 2015

Last week we announced the latest addition to our expansive color palette, the “Designer Select” Collection. It is the second new collection from Zeftron in the last year. We also debuted the Brilliant Collection in 2014. While the Brilliant Collection is vibrant and bold, the “Designer Select” Collection contains subdued, nuanced and base shades that can easily be incorporated for use in running line products or custom carpet creations.

These cool colors range from a deep charcoal grey to sterling silver.  When designing commercial carpet this collection can help you create multiple tiers of color and more intricate designs with shading effects.

Add Drama with Charcoal

Charcoal drawing
Picasso Standing Female Nude, 1910

Charcoal has been used since ancient times as a drawing material and pigment. The word “charcoal” evokes images of sharp edges, deep shadows and masterfully created pieces of art. With this color designers can easily add an element of drama to their design or create a more defined pattern.

Keep it cool with metallics

Both the Sterling and Metallic Bronze options from this collection are soft, cool and bring to mind beautiful elements in nature. In design, metal can play a huge role in bringing the whole aesthetic together. Bronze or silver can provide an excellent contrast or complement when paired with other, more traditional colors like blue, grey or green. Industrial-looking in some applications, bronze and silver can also be seen as an element of refinement, as they hold precious metal qualities.

What are the applications for the “Designer Select” Collection?

Cool neutrals are soothing and can help subdue emotion, while blues are calming and relaxing.  We’ve referenced several articles on color psychology in the past, and we continue to see design publications discuss the importance of color in hospitality settings.

These colors are suited for healthcare environments, guest room interiors at hotels, or high stress work environments.

We can’t wait to see what you will create with the “Designer Select” Collection. Our Marketing Specialists are here to help you find a carpet with the right design, construction and aesthetics desired for a specific end-use area or project.

You Told Us and We Listened: Introducing Zeftron’s New “Designers Select” Colors

Designers Select logoWe are constantly seeking input from designers about our colors. Through our first national “Color Survey” you were able to vote online to tell us what colors you wanted to see added to our color palette.

After reviewing your votes and working with our coloration experts, we are pleased to announce our new “Designers Select” Collection! The eight new colors

subtly yet inherently reflect a sense of optimism with each color boasting its own unique and distinctive character. Colors range from an organic earth tone to a complex gray that offer a touch of boldness.

The colors can be used in a variety of ways, either as primary or accent colors for carpets designed for the hospitality, corporate, retail, education…or any commercial interior.

The new Designers Select Collection comes on the heels of our recently introduced Brilliant Collection, an assortment of seven highly vibrant colors that can add a dash of energy or excitement.

“Designers Select”

The new colors are perfect complements to our existing colors and brings our overall color palette to 120.  But more importantly, they provide more choices, options and inspiration for the commercial carpet you envision. These new collections also underscore our commitment to listening and responding to designers and marketplace needs.

Each color is rigorously tested to Zeftron’s exacting standards to ensure premium color consistency.  And, like all Zeftron yarns, the new colors contain a minimum of 25 percent recycled content. They are backed by Zeftron’s lifetime warranties for colorfastness, stain removal, wear and static control.

The Bloom Collection won a Certificate of Excellence Award in 2012

“Bloom is about discovering the unforeseen beauty of something simple when looking at it from a different perspective. In this case, it’s about taking natural elements such as a leaf, a petal or a flower and viewing them through x-ray technology. When you do this, you notice that no two leaves, petals or flowers are the same, and this creates a sense of wonder and element of surprise,” said Aqua Hospitality Carpets Designer Koren Sinnock, who played the lead role in creating the collection.
